I believe you do it this way.
You multiply the den. with the whole number and add the num.
2 x 8 + 1 = 17. This now becomes 17/8 because you keep the same den.
1 x 7 + 2 = 9. This now becomes 9/7.
Now subtract 17/8 - 9/7
This equals 8/1, or, 8.
