The tactics of AIM at Wounded Knee and Alcatraz where very extreme. Protesters took hostages during the invasion of Wounded Knee, and exchanged gunfire with authorities, causing the deaths of several people. Alcatraz proved to be much less violent, and many of the protesters who took over the island were students or had families. The Alcatraz protest slowly died out as many protesters returned home or to school.
