I'd say mostly attention, they want to be recognized and taken seriously. That, and a lot of terrorists hate other countries because they're different than them. They attack countries with different religions, ideas, and cultures and one of their main goals is to convert or kill. Many terrorists also just want money, many will attack and hold hostages for ransom.
