The term used to describe it is: absorb. When something takes on water or any kind of fluids, we can call it “absorbing”. Absorb means to soak up or take in liquid or any other substance gradually by either physical action or chemical reaction. A typical example is a sponge when it is placed in a wet place, it absorbs the water.
