What did many of the people who set out to search for gold end up doing

Not finding gold LOL. Seriously on like 0.001 percent of people struck it rich the rest set up homes or shops. The ones who sold equipment to other miners did make some money but it was taxed. Other people like in the Australian gold rush were arrested for mining without a permit!
