You got to multiply, square that parenthesis and combine the like terms. kind of the opposite of simplifying.

y = -2(x+3)² - 4

y = -2(x+3)(x+3) - 4

y = -2(x² + 6x + 9) - 4

y = -2x² - 12x - 18 - 4

y = -2x² - 12x - 22
