The war really began when Nazi Germany's attack on Poland in September 1939. The United States wanted to stay neutral during the war until the attack of Pearl Harbor. That single event made the U.S. join the war...The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Pearl Harbor is located in Hawaii which is also one of the 50 states in the U.S.
