Development of the Trans-continental railroad system had a major impact on the steel industry. The train tracks required thousands of miles of steel to be produced, resulting in the steel industry booming to meet the demands of this major infrastructure project. Steel and steel alloys are still used to develop train tracks today, as it is a very strong material that can withstand mother nature.
