In a cell division process, a cell may go back to G1 phase or the first growth phase in interphase or it may enter G0 or resting phase where cell division temporarily stops. In abnormal tissues, such as cancer cells, the cell can't enter G0 or resting phase and starts to divide uncontrollably.
