The family lineage and clans in medieval Africa were important things as belonging to a lineage and a clan gave the individual a sense of responsibility, belonging and purpose as well as the opportunity to establish the social ties beyond his family.

Family was important because the West African's family was ruled as a whole, so the whole tribe is a family. Clans were the "family"fighting overt each other. Each Clan unite to fight others. Mainly to fight over Griots, or story teller.
