Set up equations to solve.  Let C = number of balls Caiden hit and let J = number of balls Josh hit.

The following equations are given:

J = (1/2)C + 9
C + J = 123

Substitute the first equation into our second equation and solve for C.

C + (1/2)C + 9 = 123
(3/2)C + 9 = 123
(3/2)(C) = 114
C = 76

Now plug in our C value into our second equation to solve for J.
76 + J = 123
J = 47

So Caiden hit 76 balls and Jos hit 47 balls.
