What are the relationship between the group number on the periodic table and the types of ions formed?

A relationship has been determined between the group number of the elements in the periodic table and the type of ions formed. It has been found that Group 1 elements form 1+ ions and Group 2 elements form 2+ ions. On the other hand, Group 6 elements form 2- ions while Group 7 elements form 1- ions.
