A square has 4 sides each of X miles. Its diagonal is X times Square Root of 2.
If the diagonal is 8 miles then 8 = xSqrt(2)
x = 8/Sqrt(2)
Rationalize the Denominator, i.e. multiply by Sqrt(2)/Sqrt(2)
X = 8Sqrt(2)/2
X = 4Sqrt(2)
