Emile likely suffered damage in his temporal lobe that made him have trouble of having to recognize familiar faces because the temporal lobe is the one responsible of the person’s selective listening and also their hearing and in a way that it disrupts of having to recognize familiar faces because it is also connected with receiving sensory information.
