x = 1 - y & 3x = 8 - 5y ; Find x

Plug in x into the second equation.

3x = 8 - 5y

3(1 - y) = 8 - 5y

Simplify.

3 - 3y = 8 - 5y

Add 5y to both sides.

3 - 3y + 5y = 8

Subtract 3 from both sides.

-3y + 5y = 8 - 3

Simplify.

2y = 5

Divide both sides by 2.

y = 5/2

Now, since you have the value of y, you simply plug y into the first equation.

x = 1 - y

x = 1 - 5/2

Simplify.

x = 1 - 2 1/2

Simplify.

x = -2/2 - 5/2

Simplify.

x = -7/2 AND -3 1/2
