Brazil gained its independence from Portugal after a military conflicts and political events and discussions that took place between 1821 and 1824. The Brazilian Empire had presented a petition for independence in 1822. The process was leaded by a member of the Portuguese royal family, the regent prince called Dom Pedro, who subsequently became the emperor of the resulting constitutional monarchy, once independence was achieved.
