Many people in the government have religious ethics that influence the way they run the government, especially when it comes to science. Stem cell research is a hot topic that has great debates on both sides. Someone in the government who has a religion that doesn't allow abortion would vote against laws to allow everyone to have abortions even though everyone in the US does not share in those same political views.
