add all assets then add all liabilities

 if assets is higher she has a positive net worth of the difference

if liabilities is higher she has a negative net worth of the difference

Assets are 'positive' money. Liabilities are 'negative' money. Therefore, you must add together the assets and subtract the liabilities. This gives you an answer of $39, or D.
