The U.S. was brought into the Vietnam war because America wanted to help control the spread of communism. During the war, Vietnam was broken into two countries: Northern and Southern Vietnam. Northern Vietnam was a communist country, whereas South Vietnam was not. This fueled the "domino theory," which meant that if Vietnam fell to communism, many of its closest neighbors would follow. The U.S. made an effort to prevent this from happening.
