How were Jenne sculptures made? What material was most commonly used?

The Jenne or Djenne sculptures were made by hand using clay mixed with grog or crushed potsherds. The most commonly used material was fired clay or terracotta. The Djenne sculptures were made in several different figures and the equestrian is the most common figure. The purpose of this sculptures still remains unknown.
