why would cactus needles be an advantageous adaptation

Because if a cactus didn't have needles a lot of animals wouldn't get poked and they'd eat it

Animals would be able to eat the cactus , but as they do have needles it allows them to get rid of prey and the cactus stores water which is good for ppl that are stuck in the desert
