The discriminant is the term under the radical sign in the quadratic formula.

x=(-b+-(b^2-4ac)^(1/2))/(2a)

It is the b^2-4ac part.  (a,b,c from the standard quadratic of form ax^2+bx+c)

In this case:

10^2-4*3*4
