The discussion of the concepts of external validity and salience has to do with the extent to which inferences that are made from the sample of a study can be applied to a wider population.

There are three types of external validity and they are:

  • Population validity,
  • Ecological validity  
  • Temporal validity

What is Research?

This refers to the systemic study of a phenomenon in order to get answers, test a hypothesis, etc, according to the scientific process.

Hence, we can see that the discussion of the concepts of external validity and salience has to do with the extent to which inferences that are made from the sample of a study can be applied to a wider population.

Some of the threats to external validity are:

  • selection bias,
  • history,
  • experimenter effect,
  • Hawthorne effect,
  • testing effect,
  • aptitude-treatment  
  • situation effect.
