Longitudinal means that motion of particles are parallel to the direction of energy transport. Instead of peaks and troughs, longitudinal waves have compressions and rarefactions. The usual speed they travel is 5 miles per second, The frequency of the longitudinal wave is the number of wavelengths per second.
