The oxygen molecule enters the body via the nose or mouth and traverses the respiratory tract into the lungs. At the lungs, gas exchange occurs and the oxygen molecule enters the bloodstream. While in the blood, it flows to the heart, whereupon the heart pumps into the body’s system to be delivered to a cell. After arriving at a cell, cellular respiration breaks down the molecule and converts it to energy.
