mr. flood represents a modern man because he is alienated and alone and lost in a world that has become meaningless yet he is a hero because he created meaning out of this meaningless world.

he sings “auld lang syne” but no one listens nevertheless he forms a sense of order with this song and his valiant recall the memories with old friends he is heroic as he creates meaning in his empty life.
