There is a theological and political concept that asserts Russia as the successor of the Roman Empire. This implies that Russia is a "third Rome" the first Rome is Rome itself, capital of Ancient Rome and the second Rome is Constantinople.
After Constantinople fell under the control of Ottoman Turks with Mehmed II in as their leader in 1453, Russia became a central part of the Byzantine alliance. Hence the name, "third Rome".
