A social contract is an unofficial agreement shared by everyone in a society in which they give up some freedom for security. This idea was popularised by Jean-Jacques Rousseau .

In philosophy, the idea of a state of nature is an effort to try and understand what humans would be like without any government or society. It was believed by Thomas Hobbes that it would result in a total chaos.
