How does rust make steel weak?

The reddish-brown flakes we found in metals are called rust. Rust are iron oxide. It is the product when an iron reacts with oxygen. Which is why metals rust when exposed to air and water. The process is called corrosion. By then metals get weaker because the strong irons are replaced with iron oxides which are flaky powder.
