You need either the x term or the y term to be the same in both equations so you can eliminate them...

8x=2y+5

6x=2y+14

Now you can subtract the two equations...

2x=9

Divide 9 by 2....

x=4.5 or 4 1/2

Plug in x into one of the original equations to find y...

13.5=y+7

Subtract 7 from 13.5...

6.5=y
