It is true that rules are a necessary component of competition. Rules are there to determine what can be done, and what cannot. If there aren't any rules, anarchy would ensue in the competition as the competitors would be allowed to do whatever they please, even kill another participant in order to win. This is why rules are established so as to prevent these things from happening.
