Rumi's poetry is caracterized by showcasing religion as his personal belief that God is always among us regardless of our noticing. He reflects on his interior faith as the main objective that occupies his mind.

His approach to Islam differs from the sharia's because it displays Islam with more flexibility and openness. He speaks of tolerance and acceptance towards newcomers, whatever sinful their past might've been before. It also gives less value to traditional structures and laws, unlike the sharia.
