Independent variables are the variables that can change on their own.

Dependent variables are the ones that change as a result.

If we study how long students study on a test and show how much that affects their grade, then the amount of time they study would be the independent variable. It changes on it's own based on the student's preference. The test scores would be the dependent variable because it changes with the amount the student studies.
