5⁻³ = [tex]\frac{1}{5^{3} }[/tex] = [tex]\frac{1}{5*5*5}[/tex] = [tex]\frac{1}{125}[/tex]

-5⁻³ = -[tex](\frac{1}{5^{3} })[/tex] = -[tex](\frac{1}{5*5*5})[/tex] = [tex]\frac{-1}{125}[/tex]

(-5⁻³)⁻¹ = [tex]\frac{1}{-5^{-3} }[/tex] = -(5³) = -(5*5*5) = -125

(-5⁻³)⁰ = 1 (anything to the zero power equals 1,   except 0⁰ = 0)
